Fibre, cable or DSL for IPTV

Connection types are sold on download speed, which is the number that matters least for live television. What separates them for streaming is steadiness, and that is a different comparison.

Why speed is the wrong comparison

What differs between technologies is how consistently they deliver it, and that is what live streams care about. Three properties matter more than the headline figure: latency, jitter, and how much of the line you share with neighbours.

DSL

Delivered over telephone copper, either to the exchange or to a street cabinet.

The distinguishing characteristic is distance sensitivity. Copper degrades over length, so two houses on the same package can get very different real speeds depending on how far they sit from the cabinet. This is also why a DSL line can be stable for years and then deteriorate with damp or a corroded joint.

For streaming: perfectly workable when the line is short and healthy. The risk is that its problems are gradual and physical rather than sudden — a line that has slowly degraded produces intermittent stutter that is easy to blame on the service.

Worth knowing: if streaming has become worse over months rather than suddenly, and you are on DSL, the line is a genuine suspect.

Cable

Delivered over coaxial, typically shared between properties in a local segment.

The distinguishing characteristic is contention. Your neighbours share local capacity, which is why cable connections often show a clear evening dip — fast at midday, noticeably slower when the street is home.

For streaming: generally strong, with high speeds and low latency. The evening dip is the thing to watch, and it is the reason a service can look flawless in a daytime trial and struggle at nine.

Upload is usually much lower than download on cable, which matters more than people expect: a saturated upload stalls downloads, which is where the QoS discussion in router settings becomes relevant.

Fibre

Full fibre runs to the property; part-fibre runs to a cabinet and uses copper for the last stretch, which behaves like DSL for the reasons above.

The distinguishing characteristic is consistency. Fibre is not affected by distance in the way copper is, nor by damp, and latency is both low and stable. Upload is often symmetrical or close to it.

For streaming: the best of the three, mostly because of steadiness rather than speed. The stability is what live television benefits from.

Full fibre is not immune to contention — capacity is still shared further upstream — but the local segment is usually far less crowded than a cable one.

What actually distinguishes them for live TV

  • Jitter. Variation in delay. Fibre lowest, cable moderate, DSL most variable especially on a long line. Live streams are more sensitive to jitter than to bandwidth.
  • Evening contention. Most visible on cable, present everywhere.
  • Upload capacity. Matters because saturated upload stalls download. Weakest on cable and DSL.
  • Physical degradation. A copper risk that fibre does not share.

Is switching worth it?

Worth it if you are on a long or ageing DSL line and streaming has been getting worse. That is the case where the technology genuinely is the constraint.

Worth considering if you are on cable and the problem is strictly an evening one, though a different provider on the same street may share the same congestion.

Not worth it if the problem is inside your house — which is more often the case than people expect. Before changing provider, confirm the connection is actually the limit: test on a device beside the router, wired, and see whether the problem persists. If it disappears, the money is better spent on your home network than on a new package.

And upgrading to a much faster package on the same technology rarely helps, because bandwidth was not the constraint.
