What a codec does
Raw video is enormous. A codec is the method used to compress it for transmission and expand it again for display. The name is a contraction of coder-decoder, because it does both jobs at opposite ends of the chain.
Two matter for IPTV. H.264, also called AVC, has been the default for well over a decade and plays on effectively everything. H.265, also called HEVC, is its successor and achieves similar quality in noticeably less data.
Why anyone uses H.265
Bandwidth costs money at every step, so a codec that delivers the same picture in less of it is attractive to whoever produces a channel. In broad terms H.265 needs meaningfully less data than H.264 for comparable quality, which is why 4K feeds in particular tend to use it — at 4K the saving is large enough to be decisive.
For you, that is mostly good news. A channel encoded in H.265 asks less of your connection than the same channel in H.264 would.
The catch: decoding has to happen somewhere
Compression is a trade. Squeezing more out of the data means more work to unpack it, and that work happens on your device.
Modern devices have dedicated hardware for this — a small part of the chip that decodes video efficiently and barely warms up. It is fast because it is purpose-built, and it can only decode the formats it was designed for.
A device built before H.265 was common has hardware decoding for H.264 and nothing for H.265. It can still play the channel by falling back to software decoding, doing the work on the general-purpose processor, but that is dramatically less efficient. On a modest streaming stick the processor simply cannot keep up, and the result is stuttering that looks exactly like a network problem.
How to recognise the pattern
Codec trouble has a distinctive signature, and it is easy to confuse with buffering.
- Only some channels are affected, and always the same ones.
- The device is warm and the interface is sluggish while the stream plays.
- The picture stutters or drops frames rather than stopping to rebuffer.
- A cable makes no difference, because the network was never the constraint.
- Another device on the same connection plays it fine.
That last one is the clearest test. If a phone plays a channel that a television stick cannot, the connection is exonerated. Genuine buffering, by contrast, tends to affect everything and improves with a better connection — see the buffering guide.
Finding out what your device actually supports
Rather than inferring from symptoms, you can usually check directly.
On Android devices
Apps such as those that report media codec support will list which formats have hardware decoders. Look for HEVC or H.265 in the hardware list rather than the software one — the distinction is the whole point.
On a Smart TV
The manufacturer's specification sheet for your exact model number is the reliable source. Search the model number with "HEVC" rather than trusting the year of manufacture, since support arrived at different times across ranges.
The practical test
Play a channel you suspect is H.265 and watch the device rather than the picture. If the interface becomes sluggish and the unit runs hot while a stream stutters, the processor is doing work the video chip should be doing.
A useful cross-check: play the same channel on a phone from the last few years, which will almost certainly have hardware H.265. If the phone is fine on the same Wi-Fi, the connection is exonerated.

Check the decoding setting first
Most players let you choose hardware or software decoding, and some default to software. If hardware decoding is available for that format, select it. Free, immediate, and worth trying before anything else.
See whether an alternative version exists
Where a channel appears more than once in the line-up, the versions may be encoded differently. Trying the other entry costs nothing.
Try a different player

Consider the device's age

What comes next: AV1
A newer codec called AV1 is beginning to appear, and the same story is repeating one generation on.
AV1 is more efficient again than H.265, and it is royalty-free, which is why large streaming platforms adopted it quickly. For live television it is still uncommon, because encoding it in real time is demanding.
What matters when buying a device now is the same principle rather than the specific name: check that video decoding happens in hardware for the formats you are likely to meet. A device with hardware H.265 will serve for a long time. One without it is already struggling with channels that exist today, which is a stronger argument for replacing it than anything AV1 will do in the next few years.

What this does not explain
Codecs get blamed for a lot they are not responsible for. They do not explain a picture that is soft on every channel — that is covered in why your picture looks soft — nor a stream that stops entirely and rebuffers, nor a problem that appears on every device at once.
Codec trouble is specific: some channels, one device, no improvement from a better connection. If your symptoms do not match that shape, the cause is probably elsewhere.

What is the difference between H.264 and H.265?
