The arithmetic
Streaming data use comes from one number: the bitrate, meaning how much data per second the stream uses. Convert it to an hourly figure like this:
Megabits per second ÷ 8 × 3600 ÷ 1000 = gigabytes per hour.
The division by eight converts bits to bytes, which is where most confusion comes from — connections are sold in bits and allowances are counted in bytes.
A rough shortcut: divide the bitrate in Mbps by two and you have GB per hour. A 6 Mbps stream is about 2.7 GB an hour, close enough for planning.
This is why resolution matters so much for allowances. Higher resolutions carry higher bitrates, so a 4K feed can consume several times what a standard-definition one does over the same programme.
Worked examples
Putting the arithmetic to work, using bitrates typical of each resolution. Treat these as illustrations of the method rather than figures for any particular channel, since bitrate varies constantly.
- A standard-definition channel at around 2 Mbps — roughly 0.9 GB an hour. An evening of three hours is under 3 GB.
- An HD channel at around 5 Mbps — roughly 2.3 GB an hour, so about 7 GB across an evening.
- A high-bitrate HD sports channel at around 8 Mbps — roughly 3.6 GB an hour. A single football match with build-up approaches 8 GB.
- A 4K feed at around 16 Mbps — roughly 7 GB an hour, so one film can exceed 14 GB.
The pattern worth taking away is that resolution changes the answer far more than duration does. Watching an SD channel all evening uses less than one film in 4K.
Why your figure will differ
Any number you read online is an estimate, because bitrate is set by whoever produces the channel and varies constantly.
- Channels differ. Two channels at the same nominal resolution can use noticeably different amounts.
- Content differs. Fast motion is harder to compress. A football match uses more than a studio discussion at the same resolution — the same reason sport tends to look worse, covered in picture quality.
- Quality may adapt. Where a stream adjusts to your connection, a weaker connection uses less data and looks worse.
Measure your own if it matters: note your router's counter, watch a channel for an hour, and look again.
Live and on-demand differ
On-demand often uses more per hour, which surprises people. Files are encoded once with no deadline, so they can afford higher bitrates for the same picture. Live is encoded in real time and compromises accordingly.

Several people watching at once
Concurrent streams add up directly. Two streams use twice the data of one, three use three times. There is no sharing — each is a separate download even if both televisions show the same channel.

Mobile data
Watching on a phone away from home is where allowances disappear quickly, and there are two reasons beyond the obvious.
First, a phone on a good mobile connection may request a higher-quality stream than you expect. Second, some players continue buffering in the background after you stop watching.

If you have an allowance rather than an unlimited connection, a few habits help.
- Do not leave live channels running unwatched. The largest avoidable use by a distance.
- Choose the SD version where a channel offers both and the screen is small.
- Watch on one device at a time where you can.
- Check your router's counter after a normal week rather than estimating.
