Frame rate, motion and judder

A picture can be sharp, stable and still look wrong the moment the camera moves. That is a separate problem from resolution or buffering, with its own causes and its own fixes.

A third quality dimension

Most picture discussion covers two things: how much detail there is, and whether the stream is arriving cleanly. Motion is a third, independent of both.

The signature is distinctive. Static shots look fine. Slow camera pans across a crowd stutter in small steps. Fast action smears. Nothing buffers and nothing looks blocky — the picture simply does not move smoothly.

Because it is neither sharpness nor stability, chasing it through the usual buffering fixes gets nowhere. It belongs to how the frames themselves are captured, converted and displayed.

Frame rates and where they come from

Video runs at a fixed number of frames per second, and the number is historical rather than chosen.

European broadcasting settled on 25 and 50 frames per second, tied to the 50 Hz mains supply. North America uses roughly 30 and 60, tied to 60 Hz. Film has run at 24 frames per second for a century.

These do not divide into each other cleanly, and that is the source of most motion problems. Content produced at one rate and displayed at another has to be converted, and every conversion method introduces some artefact.

Live sport is usually produced at 50 or 60 for exactly this reason — the higher rate handles fast motion far better. Drama and film stay at 24 or 25 because the slightly stuttery look is part of the expected aesthetic.

Interlacing, and why it still matters

Many live channels are still transmitted interlaced — written as 1080i or 576i rather than 1080p.

Interlacing was a bandwidth-saving invention: instead of sending 50 full pictures a second, send 50 half-pictures, alternating odd and even lines. On an old television those halves painted directly onto the screen and it worked.

Modern displays cannot do that. They must reassemble the halves into whole frames — deinterlacing — and how well that goes depends entirely on the quality of the processing. Poor deinterlacing produces the recognisable artefacts:

  • Fine horizontal lines or a comb effect on moving edges.
  • Flickering on detailed patterns, particularly crowds and pitch markings.
  • A softer picture during motion that snaps sharp again when movement stops.

This is done by your player and your television, not by the service. It is why the same interlaced channel can look noticeably better on one device than another.

Frame-rate mismatch, the most common cause

Here is the mechanism behind most "panning looks rough" complaints.

Your streaming device outputs at a fixed rate — very often 60 Hz, because that is the safe default. A European channel arrives at 50. Sixty does not divide by fifty, so the device must show some frames for longer than others to fill the time.

The result is uneven motion. Not dropped frames, not buffering — a regular hitch that is invisible on static shots and obvious the moment the camera pans steadily.

The fix

Most streaming devices have a setting usually called match frame rate or match content frame rate, in display settings. Enabled, the device switches its output to match whatever it is playing, and the mismatch disappears.

It is off by default on many devices because switching causes a brief black screen as the television re-syncs, which manufacturers consider untidy. That momentary blackout is a small price for correct motion, and this single setting resolves more motion complaints than anything else.

Some players have their own equivalent. If both offer it, enabling it in one place is enough.

Film judder

A separate effect with the same complaint.

Film at 24 frames per second shown on a 60 Hz display cannot be divided evenly, so frames are repeated in an uneven pattern — some shown twice, some three times. This is the classic judder visible on slow, deliberate camera moves in films, and it has existed since film first appeared on television.

Match frame rate helps here too, if your television supports a 24 Hz mode. Many do.

Worth knowing: a degree of stutter at 24 frames per second is inherent to the format, not a fault. Films have always looked like that, and removing it entirely changes how they feel.

Television motion processing

Every modern television includes motion smoothing under some brand name — motion flow, clear motion, and similar. It invents intermediate frames to make movement smoother.

Whether to use it is genuinely a matter of taste, but the trade-offs are concrete.

What it helps. Sport, where smoother motion is usually preferred and the content is already fast.

What it harms. Film and drama, where it produces the widely-disliked "soap opera effect" — 24 frames per second content made to move like video, which most people find cheap-looking even when they cannot name why.

Where it fails badly. Fast, complex motion. Invented frames are guesses, and on a struck football or a quick pan the guess visibly breaks — halos around moving objects, or a momentary tear.

A reasonable default is to turn it off, watch for a few days, then turn it back on only for sport if you miss it. Many televisions allow different settings per input or per picture mode.

Working through a motion problem

  • Confirm it is motion, not buffering. Motion problems are consistent and appear on every pan. Buffering is intermittent and unrelated to camera movement.
  • Enable match frame rate on your streaming device. This is the highest-value single change.
  • Turn off motion smoothing and judge again, since it can create exactly the artefacts you are trying to remove.
  • Compare an interlaced channel with a progressive one. If only interlaced channels are affected, it is deinterlacing, and a different player may handle it better.
  • Try a different player before blaming the device — deinterlacing and frame handling vary a lot between apps.
  • Check the film case separately, because some judder there is normal and not worth chasing.
