Guest networks, smart devices and congestion

A network with thirty connected things behaves differently from one with five, and the television is usually where you notice. Separating traffic helps — but not for the reason most advice suggests.

Airtime, not bandwidth

The usual explanation is that devices "use up bandwidth". For smart-home equipment that is rarely true — a smart plug transfers almost nothing.

What they consume is airtime. Wi-Fi is a shared medium where only one device transmits at a time on a given band. Every device that speaks, however briefly, occupies a slot that nothing else can use.

The problem compounds because a device with a weak signal transmits slowly. A sensor at the end of the garden sending a tiny message may hold the channel for many times longer than a strong device sending the same thing. Twenty such devices produce real interruption for a live stream, while barely registering on any bandwidth measurement.

What a guest network actually does

Worth being accurate, because guest networks are often recommended as a performance fix and that is not quite what they are.

A guest network is a separate logical network on the same hardware and usually the same radio. It isolates devices from each other, which is a genuine security benefit — a compromised device on the guest network cannot reach your computers.

What it does not do by itself is create separate airtime. Devices on the guest network share the same channel and compete exactly as before.

So moving smart-home devices to a guest network improves security and, on its own, does little for streaming.

What does help: separating by band

The change that helps is putting devices on different radios rather than different names.

Most smart-home equipment only supports 2.4 GHz, which is convenient: it is already confined to the band you want the television to avoid. The useful move is making sure the television is definitely on 5 GHz, not letting the router decide.

Splitting the bands into separately named networks makes this deliberate rather than hopeful — the mechanics are in router settings that actually help streaming.

A guest network on 2.4 GHz for smart devices, with the main network on 5 GHz for televisions and computers, gives you both the isolation and the separation. That combination is worth doing; the guest network alone is not.

Finding the devices that cost the most

Not all devices are equal. Look for two things.

Devices at the edge of range. Anything with a weak signal — a garden camera, a garage sensor, a doorbell — transmits slowly and holds the channel longest. Moving these closer, or adding an access point nearer to them, helps disproportionately.

Devices that talk constantly. Cameras streaming continuously are in a different class from a thermostat reporting hourly. A single camera uploading video can affect a television more than twenty sensors.

Your router's device list usually shows connection speed per device. Anything connected at a very low rate is a candidate.

A sensible arrangement

  • Televisions and computers on 5 GHz, or wired.
  • Smart-home devices on 2.4 GHz, ideally on a guest or separate network for isolation.
  • Cameras wired where possible, since they are the heaviest continuous users.
  • Visitors on the guest network, which is what it is for.

This is worth doing once and then forgetting. It is not maintenance.

When this is not your problem

Be honest about scope. If streaming is poor at three in the morning with everything else switched off, congestion is not the cause and reorganising the network will not help.

The signature of a congestion problem is that it correlates with household activity — worse when everyone is home, better when the house is empty. If your problem does not follow that pattern, look at coverage or the connection itself instead, using Wi-Fi optimisation.
