How to optimise your Wi-Fi for IPTV

If a cable is not practical, Wi-Fi can carry live television perfectly well — but it usually needs a little attention first. These are the changes that make a real difference, in the order worth trying them.

Start with the band

Most routers broadcast on two frequencies, and which one your television is using matters more than any other single setting.

2.4 GHz travels further and passes through walls better, but it is narrow and crowded. Every neighbouring network, plus microwaves, cordless phones and a great deal of smart-home equipment, shares it.

5 GHz is faster and far less congested, at the cost of range. Through one wall it is usually still the better choice; through three it may not reach at all.

Many routers publish both under one name and decide for you, which is convenient until it decides wrongly and leaves a television on 2.4 GHz. If your router allows separate names for each band, giving them different names and connecting the television explicitly to 5 GHz removes the guesswork.

Measure the signal rather than guessing

Most Wi-Fi advice is given blind. A number takes two minutes to find and changes what you should do.

Signal strength is measured in dBm, always as a negative number, where closer to zero is stronger. Broadly: −50 dBm is excellent, −60 is good, −70 is workable for live television but marginal, and −80 will not hold a stream reliably.

Where to look depends on the device. Android TV boxes usually show it under network status. Smart TVs often show bars rather than a figure, in which case a phone standing where the television is, using any Wi-Fi analyser app, gives you a usable reading.

The value of measuring is that it separates two problems that need opposite fixes. A weak signal is a placement or coverage problem. A strong signal that still stutters is congestion or interference, and moving the router will not help.

Move the router before buying anything

Router placement is the cheapest improvement available and the most frequently ignored.

  • Get it out of the cupboard. Routers are often installed where the phone line enters, which is usually the worst place in the house.
  • Raise it. Signal spreads outward and slightly downward. On the floor, much of it goes into the floor.
  • Keep it clear of metal and water. Radiators, filing cabinets, fish tanks and mirrors all absorb or reflect signal.
  • Away from the microwave. Microwaves emit strongly in the 2.4 GHz band.

Moving a router two metres and up onto a shelf frequently achieves more than replacing it.

Deal with the neighbours

In a flat or terrace, the biggest source of interference is other people's Wi-Fi. Routers pick a channel automatically, and many pick the same popular ones.

Most routers can scan and report which channels are busy. On 2.4 GHz only channels 1, 6 and 11 avoid overlapping each other, so choosing whichever of those three is quietest is usually the best available option. On 5 GHz there are far more non-overlapping channels and the problem is much smaller — another reason to prefer it.

Worth repeating occasionally, since your neighbours' equipment changes too.

Channel width, where wider is not always better

Beyond which channel your router uses, there is how much space it takes up. Wider channels carry more data but overlap more neighbours, so the best setting depends on how crowded your area is.

On 2.4 GHz, 20 MHz is almost always right. The band is too narrow for 40 MHz to do anything but interfere with everyone, including you.

On 5 GHz, 80 MHz is a sensible default in a house. In a dense block of flats, dropping to 40 MHz sometimes gives a steadier connection than a wider one fighting for space — and steady is what live television needs.

If your router offers an automatic setting, it is usually fine. It is worth trying manually only when you have measured a strong signal and are still seeing stutter, which points at congestion rather than coverage.

Band steering

Many routers advertise both bands under one name and decide which your device uses. Convenient, until it parks a television on 2.4 GHz and leaves it there. If your router allows it, giving each band its own name and connecting the television explicitly removes the guesswork permanently.

Reduce what else is competing

Bandwidth is shared, but so is airtime. A device with a weak signal takes longer to send the same data, which slows everything else on the network while it does so.

  • Move smart-home devices that sit at the edge of range closer, or onto 2.4 GHz where they belong.
  • Schedule large backups and updates for overnight.
  • If your router supports it, keep the television on 5 GHz and push low-bandwidth devices to 2.4 GHz.

This is why a stream can be perfect all day and struggle at eight in the evening, when everyone is home and every device is active.

Consider where the signal has to travel

Wi-Fi does not care about distance so much as what is in the way. A thick masonry wall, a chimney breast, underfloor heating or foil-backed insulation can each cost more signal than a whole floor of open space.

Restart, occasionally

Unfashionable advice, but some routers genuinely degrade over long uptimes — memory fills, channel selection goes stale, the device gets warm and throttles. A restart every few weeks costs nothing.

If a restart reliably fixes things for a day or two and then the problem returns, that is a pattern worth noting: it usually points at the router itself rather than at your connection.

Knowing when tuning is not the answer

Wi-Fi tuning fixes Wi-Fi problems. It is worth being honest about when the problem is elsewhere.

  • If the stream is poor on every device including one beside the router, the issue is not Wi-Fi.
  • If only one channel misbehaves, that is the channel.

5 GHz where it reaches reliably. It is faster and much less congested. 2.4 GHz travels further through walls, so it is the fallback when the television is far from the router rather than the default.

Out in the open, raised off the floor, away from metal, water and microwaves, and as central to the house as the wiring allows. Moving it out of a cupboard often helps more than replacing it.

Will a Wi-Fi extender fix IPTV buffering?
