Wi-Fi 5 vs Wi-Fi 6 for streaming

Wi-Fi 6 is genuinely better than Wi-Fi 5, but not in the way router marketing suggests, and often not in the way that helps one television. Here is what it actually changes.

The names, briefly

Wi-Fi 5 is the marketing name for 802.11ac, and Wi-Fi 6 for 802.11ax. The numbers were introduced because the letters had become impossible to reason about. Wi-Fi 6E is Wi-Fi 6 with access to an additional band, discussed below.

What Wi-Fi 6 actually improves

The headline is a higher maximum speed, and that is the least relevant part for television. A single HD stream needs a small fraction of what Wi-Fi 5 already delivers, so a faster ceiling changes nothing.

The real improvements are about handling many devices at once.

Sharing airtime more efficiently

Wi-Fi 5 largely serves one device at a time, very quickly. Wi-Fi 6 can serve several simultaneously by dividing each transmission between them. In a house with twenty connected things, that reduces the queue every device waits in — and queueing is what makes a live stream stutter.

Scheduling when devices talk

Wi-Fi 6 lets the router tell devices when to transmit rather than having them compete. Fewer collisions means fewer retries, and retries are a direct cause of the jitter that live television dislikes.

Better behaviour at the edges

Improvements to how signals are encoded make weak connections somewhat more reliable, though they do not extend range meaningfully.

Why it may do nothing for you

Three conditions have to hold before any of it applies.

  • The television must support Wi-Fi 6 too. A Wi-Fi 6 router talking to a Wi-Fi 5 television communicates as Wi-Fi 5. Most televisions and sticks in use today are Wi-Fi 5.
  • The benefits are about congestion. If the problem is distance, walls or a weak signal, Wi-Fi 6 does not fix it — that is coverage, addressed in Wi-Fi optimisation.
  • Your bottleneck must be the Wi-Fi. If the broadband line is the constraint, the network inside the house is irrelevant.

This is why people upgrade a router, see no change, and conclude the standard is marketing. It is not — but it solves a problem they may not have.

When upgrading is worth it

Worth it when a busy household has many active devices and streams degrade at exactly the times everyone is home. That is congestion, which is what Wi-Fi 6 addresses.

Worth it if your existing router is old enough that its problems are age rather than standard — an ageing Wi-Fi 5 router may be beaten by a new one regardless of the label.

Not worth it if your devices are all Wi-Fi 5, unless you plan to replace them soon anyway.

What about Wi-Fi 6E and Wi-Fi 7?

Wi-Fi 6E adds the 6 GHz band, which is currently almost empty. In a congested block of flats that emptiness is genuinely valuable — but range is shorter still than 5 GHz, and both router and device must support it. For a television one room from the router it can be excellent; through the house it is often worse than 5 GHz.

Wi-Fi 7 continues the pattern: higher ceilings and better handling of many devices. The same reasoning applies. For a single television, none of this competes with a cable.
