Reading the stream information overlay in your player

Most IPTV players can show you exactly what they are receiving: resolution, bitrate, codec, frame rate. It is the difference between guessing at a picture problem and knowing which link caused it, and almost nobody opens it.

Where to find it

The name varies — stream info, media information, codec info, technical details — and so does the route to it. In most players it is either a long press on the OK or centre button during playback, or an entry in the menu that appears when you press up or down while a channel is playing.

On a desktop player it is usually in a menu labelled tools or media information. On a phone, tapping the screen once and looking for an information icon is the usual route.

Resolution: what you are actually being sent

Shown as two numbers, typically 1920x1080 for HD, 1280x720 for a lower HD tier, 720x576 or similar for standard definition, and 3840x2160 for 4K.

This is the single most useful line, because it is the one the television cannot tell you. A television reports the signal arriving over HDMI, which is your streaming device’s output setting, not the stream. A stick outputting 4K shows a 4K badge while playing a 576-line channel upscaled twice over.

If a channel looks soft and this line says 720x576, you have your answer and there is nothing to fix — that is what the source is. Our guide on what 4K actually requires covers the chain in full.

Bitrate: the number that predicts quality best

Bitrate is how much data per second the stream is using, usually shown in kbps or Mbps. Of everything on the overlay, it correlates most closely with how good the picture looks.

Resolution without bitrate is a label rather than a promise. A 1080p stream at a low bitrate will look blocky on fast movement and can genuinely look worse than a well-encoded 720p stream, because there is not enough data to describe what is happening. This is why two channels that both claim HD can look very different.

Watch it move rather than reading it once. A bitrate that starts healthy and falls away after a minute points at the connection or at adaptive switching, which our explanation of how adaptive bitrate works covers. A bitrate that sits low from the start is simply how that channel is provided.

Codec: why some channels struggle and others do not

Usually shown as H.264 or AVC, or H.265 or HEVC. Occasionally something older.

This line explains one of the most confusing symptoms in IPTV: most channels play perfectly while a handful stutter badly on the same device. If the ones that struggle are all H.265 and the ones that work are all H.264, the device lacks proper hardware decoding for the newer codec.

The fix, where there is one, is to make sure the player is using hardware rather than software decoding. Where the hardware genuinely does not support it, no setting helps and the device is the limit. Our guide on H.264 and H.265 covers this in detail.

Frame rate: the motion clue

Commonly 25, 30, 50 or 60 frames per second, sometimes with an i or p for interlaced or progressive.

The number itself matters less than whether it matches what your television is doing. A 50fps source displayed on a panel running at 60Hz has to be converted, and that conversion is a frequent cause of stutter on panning shots that people blame on their connection.

An i rather than a p means the source is interlaced and is being deinterlaced somewhere, which is another common source of combing artefacts on movement. Our guide on frame rate, motion and judder covers both cases and what to do.

The audio lines

You will usually see a codec such as AAC, AC-3 or E-AC-3, a channel count such as 2.0 or 5.1, and a sample rate.

The channel count is the practically useful one. A 5.1 track played through a television’s own two speakers is being folded down, and a poor fold-down is the usual reason dialogue sounds buried — our guide on volume and loudness covers what to do about it.

If audio fails entirely on certain channels, comparing the codec on a working channel against a failing one usually identifies the format your chain cannot handle, which our guide on audio formats and passthrough addresses.

Using it to diagnose

  • Low resolution, steady bitrate: the source is simply SD, and nothing on your side changes it
  • Good resolution, low or falling bitrate: connection or adaptive switching, not the channel
  • H.265 on the channels that stutter, H.264 on those that do not: the device cannot decode it properly
  • Frame rate that does not match your panel: a motion and conversion problem, not a bandwidth one
  • Fine on one device, poor on another with the same numbers: the difference is the screen and its processing

What it cannot tell you

It describes what arrived, not why. A falling bitrate is visible here, but whether the cause is your Wi-Fi, your broadband or something further upstream needs the tests in our buffering guide.

It also says nothing about what happens after the player hands the picture to the screen. Sharpening, motion smoothing and scaling all happen downstream and can spoil a technically perfect stream — why the picture looks soft covers that half.

How do I see the resolution of an IPTV stream?

Why does my TV say 1080p when the channel looks bad?

The television reports the signal from your streaming device, which outputs at a fixed resolution regardless of the source. Only the player knows what the stream really is, so check there.

There is no single figure, since it depends on codec, resolution and content. What matters more is stability: a bitrate that holds steady looks better than a higher one that keeps collapsing, and a low-bitrate 1080p stream can look worse than a good 720p one.

Why do only some channels stutter on my device?

Compare the codec line. If the channels that stutter are H.265 and the ones that work are H.264, your device lacks proper hardware decoding for the newer codec, and no setting will fully fix that.

My player has no stream information option. What can I do?

Some simpler apps, particularly on Smart TV platforms, do not offer one. You can install a player that does on a phone and test the same channel there to get the numbers.
